The NHS buys through a different rhythm to the rest of the public sector. Individual trusts run their own procurements for estates, catering, facilities and clinical consumables, but a large share of the money moves through national and regional frameworks — NHS Supply Chain, Crown Commercial Service agreements and regional collaboratives — where the tender you are looking at is a place on a list rather than a single contract.
That matters for how you bid. A trust-level contract is winnable on price, delivery and local presence. A framework place is won on compliance: financial standing, insurance levels, information governance, and increasingly social value. The paperwork is heavier and the timescales longer, but a framework place typically runs three to four years and produces call-offs without further open competition.
The practical route in for most suppliers is a below-threshold trust contract first, then the framework once you have NHS references. Watch award notices as closely as tender notices — they tell you which suppliers hold the incumbent position and roughly what the work was worth.
Published contract award notices from the last two years: who won, for how much, and the official notice. Across 952 awards with a published value, the typical contract was £108k, and half fell between £47k and £327k.
3,487 awards from NHS bodies in the last two years. Subscribers see what comparable contracts went for on every tender they open.
No. NHS Supply Chain covers a large share of consumables and equipment, but trusts still run their own tenders for estates, facilities, professional services and much clinical work. Plenty of NHS spend is awarded outside it.
Expect questions on financial standing, employer and public liability insurance, health and safety policy, information governance and data handling if you touch patient data, and evidence of social value. Clinical suppliers face additional regulatory checks.
NHS trusts and integrated care boards in England publish contracts above £30,000 on Contracts Finder and higher-value work on Find a Tender; Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish health bodies also use their national portals. The listing above pulls those notices together and filters them to NHS and hospital buyers, and a daily alert sends new ones in your categories each morning.
Hospital trusts advertise on the same national services as the rest of the NHS, usually running the bidding itself through their own e-tendering system. Many products are bought through NHS Supply Chain or regional collaborative frameworks instead, so check whether what you sell is framework-led before chasing individual trusts.
