Councils are the highest-volume publishers of public contracts in the UK and, for most suppliers, the sensible first target. They buy across a wider range of categories than any other kind of buyer — highways and grounds maintenance, school catering, social care, IT, cleaning, vehicle fleets, consultancy — and a great deal of it sits below the regulated thresholds, where the process is faster and the competition is smaller.
Local presence counts here in a way it does not with central government. Councils weight social value heavily, and social value in practice often means local employment, local supply chains and community benefit. A regional supplier with a credible local story frequently beats a larger national bidder on score even at a higher price.
The catch is fragmentation. Every authority runs its own portal alongside the national ones, publishes on its own schedule, and words its notices differently. Watching the twenty councils in your region individually is the job this site exists to remove.
Published contract award notices from the last two years: who won, for how much, and the official notice. Across 3,212 awards with a published value, the typical contract was £84k, and half fell between £33k and £200k.
5,480 awards by UK councils in the last two years. Subscribers see what comparable contracts went for on every tender they open.
Everything from a few thousand pounds for a single site to multi-million multi-year frameworks. English authorities must publish contracts over £12,000 on Contracts Finder, so a large volume of genuinely small, winnable work is public.
Commonly 10 to 20 per cent of the total score, and some authorities weight it higher. For a close bid it decides the outcome, so it deserves the same effort as the price.
